In October 2023, I traveled to Monterrey, Mexico, with the University of Ottawa’s Dean of Engineering and his team. The university's objective was to expand its international partnerships through academic and student-led collaborations.
One of these initiatives included connecting with a really ambitious group of students at Tec de Monterrey in Monterrey to help mentor and build their hackathon community. We focused on engagement, product design, and growth. Despite being 1,928 miles apart for most of the time we worked together (over a year), I had the opportunity, thanks to the generosity of the University of Ottawa’s International Experience Scholarship, to travel to Monterrey and meet the students in person! A few months later, both hackathon groups collaborated to host an international hackathon, which brought together a combined 800 students.
If you're curious, I wrote a small blog post at the time about this experience. It goes more in-depth about my travel experience, connecting with students, organizing an international event, and includes travel photos. :)
